DaimlerChrysler is looking into buying part of the company whose voice-recognition software is used in trucking subsidiary Freightliner's new Truck Productivity Computer.

According to Dow Jones Newswires, DaimlerChrysler is in preliminary discussions with Belgian software firm Lernout & Hauspie Speech Products. The company is interested in the unit that develops voice recognition technology for vehicles. L&H is operating under bankruptcy protection in the U.S. and Belgium.
Freightliner's Truck Productivity Computer, expected to go into production later this year, is an on-board computer, communications interface, vehicle information display, global positioning system, AM/FM stereo, weather radio and CD player all in one. It fits into the standard radio slot in a commercial truck dashboard.
