Truckers who let their engines idle for more than 10 minutes will face a $500 fine or jail time under an anti-pollution measure passed last week by the St. Louis Board of Aldermen.
According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the new ordinance is one of many steps being taken because the metropolitan area does not comply with federal ozone standards. The measure, which will target big rigs and school and tour buses that idle their engines unnecessarily, was passed Friday without opposition, and is expected to take effect May 1.
Timothy Dee, the city air pollution control commissioner, said the focus of the measure is to reduce pollution from trucks and buses. Motorists are also included in the measure, but he said it is unlikely that drivers of cars would be ticketed.
Dee told the paper his agency plans to mail notifications about the new law to major truck and bus fleet operators. He said he is especially concerned about trucks that idle at truckstops in the city's Hall Street industrial sector.
