Safeway has rehired 300 employees who were laid off during the early days of the strike involving Teamsters and Summit Logistics, which operates Safeway's distribution center in Tracy, Calif.
According to the Modesto Bee, the strike began Oct. 18 when nearly 1,600 Teamsters, whose contract with Summit had expired, walked off the job to protest what the union claims are unsafe working conditions for both warehouse workers and drivers.
Bruce Everette, president of Safeway’s Northern California Division, said deliveries were brought to a near standstill during the first days of the strike, but have since improved, thanks to a court ruling last week limited picketing efforts by the Teamsters.
