Truckers will soon be able to check the Internet for the status of containers and waiting times at Port Authority of New York and New Jersey facilities.

The Port Authority has awarded a $1.9 million contract to Americas Systems Inc. of Murray Hill, N.J., to develop and operate the Freight Information Real-time System for Transport, or FIRST. Information from various sources will include the status of cargo shipment, individual containers, ship schedules, and highway traffic conditions.
According to the Port Authority, FIRST information will be available on the Internet at www.firstnynj.com sometime next year.
FIRST, the first such port information system of its kind, has received funding as an Intelligent Transportation System initiative and the I-95 Corridor Coalition, a regional partnership of transportation agencies along the I-95 corridor from Maine to Virginia.
