After two days of warnings, the government of Quebec is cracking down on striking truckers in the Port of Montreal by slapping the unions representing them with $1 million in fines.
According to the Montreal Gazette, the sanctions, which union leaders say they will fight, are called for in the back-to-work legislation the National Assembly adopted last Thursday.
Justice Minister Linda Goupil issued a statement that said the Confederation of National Trade Unions and the Syndicat National du Transport Routier will pay $125,000 for every day they defy the law. The fines levied are retroactive to Nov. 3, the morning after the special legislation was adopted.
The strike began on Oct. 22 by 900 independent truck drivers who have signed union cards with CNTU, trying to force the approximately 40 companies they work for at the port to negotiate a single contract with them.
