Five big rigs, including a tanker truck, and a car collided and burned during heavy fog in Marysville, Ohio, yesterday, killing two people and creating a fireball that melted telephone wires.
According to Associated Press reports, the crash apparently occurred when a tanker truck believed to be carrying gasoline swerved to avoid three stopped dump trucks and hit an oncoming flatbed truck on U.S. 42.
The drivers of the tanker and a car that drove into the burning wreckage were killed. Their identities were not immediately released.
The driver of the flatbed, Stanley Leman, 43, of Cleveland, was in critical condition in the burn unit at the Ohio State University Medical Center yesterday.
Lt. David Wilson of the Jerome Township Fire Department said Leman jumped out of his truck while it was still rolling.
"He saved his life by running when he did," Wilson told AP. Leman was burned on his hands and head.
The tanker driver couldn't see the dump trucks, which were stopped to make a left turn, because of heavy fog, officials said.
