Illinois Gov. George Ryan says he won't resign or apologize to a family that lost six children in a wreck that helped prompt an investigation into instances of commercial drivers' licenses being exchanged for bribes.

Scott Willis, whose children were killed in that crash, called for Ryan to step down after a former inspector in the secretary of state's office said Ryan was aware of possible illegal fund-raising when he was secretary of state. The fund-raising involved the issuance of CDLs to applicants who couldn't pass the test in exchange for bribes that reportedly went into Ryan's gubernatorial campaign fund.
Ryan says he was unaware of the licenses-for bribes scam. He also denied suggestions that he has been trying to influence the appointment of the next U.S. Attorney in northern Illinois. The new U.S. Attorney will probably decide whether to continue the investigation into the CDL scandal.
