A fuel protest that interrupted Peru’s exports and food delivery for 10 days ended last week when the National Union of Carriers ended the strike of about 100,000 independent truckers.
Truckers began blocking access to refineries in protest of high diesel prices Sept. 19, and also drew attention to issues such as high fines paid by drivers for traffic offenses.
The union reached an agreement with the Transportation and Communications ministry on tolls on the nation's highway system, so drivers would not have to pay fees per axle. In addition, a special commission was created to review truckers' other requests, particularly their call for incremental fuel price controls by the government.
