Memphis, Tenn.-based Barton Freightliner has been sold to a South African company for $76 million.

According to the (Memphis) Commercial Appeal, the privately owned truck dealership employs 450 workers at 14 sales and customer support sites in West Tennessee, North Mississippi and Arkansas. Barton holds nearly 5 percent of the market, making it one of the largest Freightliner truck dealerships in the country.
This deal gives Barloworld, a Johannesburg, South Africa-based global dealership with 22,400 employees in 30 countries, a major foothold in the U.S. truck market.
The dealership will become part of Barlow's Industrial Distribution Division based in Charlotte, N.C.
"The timing was right for us," said Jim Barton, president of the Barton Group, parent company of the dealership.
Barton Freightliner operates eight full-service truck branches, three body shops and two SelectTruck used truck sales branches in the Mid-South.
