Con-Way Transportation Services, Palo Alto, CA, is equipping hundreds of its drivers with new generation, hand-held computers. The $7.2-million program, which features the Norand 6100 pen-key computer, will roll out 823 units at 20 locations with another 1,200 units scheduled by the end of 1998. The units allow drivers to capture and confirm accurate shipment data at the customer’s dock when the freight is picked up or delivered. The system is part of Con-Way’s new technology platform also includes mobile radio communications systems, computer-aided dispatching with PC-based local area networks and mainframe data processing.
