Australian truckers have pulled back from a threatened fuel blockade, pending talks with the federal government.
According to Associated Press reports, Transport Workers Union delegates expect to put their concerns about high petrol prices before Deputy Prime Minister John Anderson this week.
“It's far from over, but with talks going on we may be able to resolve something in the near future,” national president Hughie Williams told the AP.
Aussie owner-operators say skyrocketing fuel costs have made it nearly impossible to keep their business going. Truckers have already organized fuel protests that blockaded depots in Melbourne and Brisbane, and Sydney truckers told the AP that they are considering similar actions now that the Olympic Games are over.
Williams said the situation was "volatile" but that owner-operators were happy that talks with the government were in the works.
