Plans for a $25 million travel complex in Atlanta were thrown into turmoil last week when a county commission unanimously rejected rezoning requests for the planned building site because of anti-truck sentiment.

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the Clayton County Commission rejected rezoning for restaurants and offices, which were two aspects of the proposed 80-acre project at I-675 and Ellenwood Road/Forest Parkway in Atlanta. The travel plaza project would have included two hotels, an upscale restaurant, auto and truck fueling stations, offices and warehouses.
The commission also voted unanimously to impose a six-month suspension on truck terminals to study the impact of the trucking industry on the I-675 corridor.
The commissioners’ vote sent a roomful of area residents home happy, since the proposed site was across the street from a 700-student elementary school.
"Drugs, alcohol, and prostitution…that's what you are going to get if you put this in here," area resident Brian Green told commissioners. "I drive a truck. I know."
Many residents said they would have supported the project if the trucking facilities had been removed from the plan.
