Flying J is helping to address the nationwide parking shortage with aggressive expansion plans.
Flying J has 10 locations currently under construction. Travel plazas scheduled to open in the next two months include Napanee, Ontario, London, Ontario, and Carnesville, GA. Another 28 sites are currently in the permitting process.
Travel plazas that opened earlier this year include locations in LaSalle, Ill., Barstow, Calif., and South Beloit, Ill.
An example of Flying J's new travel plazas can be found in Georgia on I-20 at Exit 19 south of Atlanta (pictured). Until recently, there were virtually no truckstops between the state line with Alabama and Atlanta. The new travel plaza has done better than anticipated, according to manager James Swanson, pumping 2 million gallons a month. The new travel plaza boasts 300 parking spaces, 12 diesel fuel pumps, J-Scales, a barber shop, a laundry room, TV room, game room, showers and convenience store. In addition to the regular sit-down restaurant, there are two quick-service restaurants, Magic Dragon Chinese and Pepperoni's pizza.
In its recent "Long Haul Letter" newsletter, Flying J noted that it is working to help solve the national parking shortage by adding more and more travel plaza sites. This shortage is often exacerbated, they note, because nearby communities often resist plans for truckstops because of concerns such as noise and pollution.
"Flying J deals with city planning commissions," says the article, "educating them of the fact that new travel plaza operations are critical not only to the transportation industry but ultimately to the general economic growth of this country."
