The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to review a federal appeals court ruling that blocked the Environmental Protection Agency from enforcing strict clean air standards adopted in 1997.

In a suit brought by a coalition of industry groups, including the American Trucking Associations, a three-judge panel of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled last year that EPA overstepped its authority in issuing the new standards. Although the 1990 Clean Air Act gives EPA the authority to issue air quality standards, the panel said it cannot just implement its own open-ended policy preferences.
Government lawyers, in appealing the decision, argued that the ruling could have widespread impact on other agencies and their ability to establish standards.
