Specialty truck body manufacturer Supreme Industries reported first quarter 2000 net income of $2.8 million on revenues of $71.8 million, both records. Net income for first quarter 1999 was $2.4 million on revenues of $56.4 million.
"Business fundamentals continue strong as backlog during the quarter increased 6% over last year's first quarter," said Omer Kropf, president. "However, the tight labor conditions that have been affecting our performance over the past several quarters persisted and operating margins declined."
Kropf said their internal production cost of fiberglass reinforced plywood (FRP) is currently below the average external market price for comparable products and they will continue to work on measures to improve operating efficiency and reduce costs.
In addition to specialized truck bodies, Goshen, IN, based Supreme Industries builds the StarTrans line of special-purpose "shuttle-type" buses.
