The federal government of Australia plans to fund a study of electronic monitoring devices for truck drivers to cut down on fatigue-related accidents.

Calling truck driver fatigue a "priority issue," Australian Deputy Prime Minister John Anderson said during a trucking industry convention last week that the government has set aside $100,000 for a review of regulatory approaches to fatigue management in truck drivers. Part of that money, he said, will be spent on a trial of driver-specific monitoring devices that could be used as an alternative to log books.
Anderson also launched a campaign to encourage truck drivers to wear seat belts. He cited a 1998 study that found 94% of tractor-trailer drivers were not wearing seat belts.
