Qualcomm Lands Ryder, Dart
March 8, 2000
Even as competitors proliferate, Qualcomm, Inc. of San Diego, CA, continues its decade-long run on the largest fleets in the U.S. The latest industry giant into the Qualcomm camp is Ryder Systems, Inc., operators of the nation’s 12th largest fleet.
According to a joint press release from Qualcomm and Ryder, the Miami-based leasing and logistics company will purchase up to 10,000 of Qualcomm’s OmniTRACS systems "for Ryder and its clients’ vehicles." According to Ryder spokeswoman Lisa Brumfield, the systems will be used in Ryder’s Dedicated Contract Carriage operation. Ryder’s total U.S. fleet consists of 100,000 trucks and 40,000 trailers. Brumfield said Ryder was testing other mobile communications systems but would not provide any details.
Meanwhile, in another joint press release, Qualcomm and Dart Transportation of St. Paul, MN, announced a deal for 1,000 OmniTRACS units. Dart runs the 46th largest fleet of some 2,300 owner-operated trucks and has worked with other mobile communications vendors in the past. According to a January press release, Dart is testing the TrackWare trailer-tracking system from HighwayMaster of Richardson, TX.
