A bill awaiting a hearing before the Kentucky House Transportation Committee would raise speed limits for motorists but not for truckers.
The proposal would raise the speed limit for passenger vehicles from 65 mph to 70 mph on parkways and interstates. For commercial vehicles, it would remain at 65. The state's secretary of transportation would have the authority to set lower limits on stretches of road too dangerous for 70 mph speed limits.
The bill, House Bill 114, also would double the fines for all speeding violations.
While many truckers believe that these "split speed limits" are dangerous, the bill's sponsor, Rep. Brent Yonts, says trucks need more time to stop, so they shouldn't travel as fast as cars.
The Kentucky State Police and AAA Kentucky caution against raising the speed limit, saying it would adversely affect safety.
