While estimates vary on the total number of drivers using the Internet, one job-matching company says there's no doubt about the growth in Internet usage in the past year.

1-800-DRIVERS reports a 349% increase in the number of applications processed via the Internet in 1999, compared to the previous year.
"The convenience of the Internet and its increasing availability and affordability for drivers played a large part in this dramatic increase," said 1-800-DRIVERS founder Jim O'Neill. "While there will always be a percentage of the drivers who prefer to handle their initial job search over the phone, the numbers illustrate the growing acceptance of the Internet."
1-800-DRIVERS processed 39,423 applications via the Internet in 1999, compared with 11,264 via the Internet in 1998.
