Deadline Extended For Paperless Log Pilot Project
July 14, 1999
Carriers that want to participate in the Federal Highway Administration's Global Positioning System pilot demonstration project now have until December 31,1999, to submit applications.
The project allows carriers to record and monitor hours-of-service compliance with GPS and related systems instead of handwritten logs.
The pilot program was announced in April 1998. Werner Enterprises was the first to sign up. FHWA says 17 other carriers have expressed a desire to participate, but "development of the related safety management computer system has been slow," the agency said. The deadline was extended to June 30, 1999, but the interested carriers were not able to purchase or develop the required software in time.
