Dec. 7 – The results of the Teamsters presidential election could be announced as early as today, according to published reports.

Federal officials began counting the mail-in ballots last Thursday in the election between James P. Hoffa and Tom Leedham. Hoffa, son of legendary Teamsters boss Jimmy Hoffa, narrowly lost the presidential election to incumbent Ron Carey in 1996. Carey was removed from office and barred from running again after illegal fund-raising allegations.
The count was expected to last through the weekend. Early results Friday showed Hoffa in the lead, but not by nearly as large a margin as he had predicted.
