Michigan Bridge Owners Plan Second Span To Canada
December 2, 1998
Dec. 4 – Owners of the Ambassador Bridge between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, say they plan to add a second span to the busy international border crossing in anticipation of North American Free Trade Agreement traffic.
The Associated Press reports that the second span would have six to eight lanes and would open as early as 2012, according to officials of the private Detroit International Bridge Co. Plans are to put the new span just west of the existing bridge, built in 1929. Design work for the expansion is under way, and the company is acquiring land in Detroit and Windsor.
The expansion fits in with a $100 million Michigan Department of Transportation project to connect the bridge to Interstates 75 and 96. The bridge currently only carries about half its capacity, but traffic is expected to grow as a result of NAFTA.
