Oct. 21 – After intense lobbying by the trucking industry, the Office of Motor Carriers will stay where it is.
A proposal to move OMC out of the Federal Highway Administration was dropped from the $500 billion spending bill hammered out by Congress late last week.
Virginia Rep. Frank Wolf’s effort to move the agency to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration was rejected by the conference committee working on the spending bill. It took strong intervention by Senate majority leader Trent Lott to kill the language. The American Trucking Assns. lobbied hard to keep OMC where it was.
