Oct. 20 – New York Gov. George Pataki signed legislation last week requiring trucks and buses to pass the same emission tests required for cars – the 15th state to do so, according to the Associated Press.

The law requires that all heavyduty diesel-powered vehicles operating in the metropolitan region – New York City, Long Island, Westchester and Rockland counties – undergo annual emission testing. In the rest of the state, vehicles will be subject to spot roadside emission tests, with fines of $700 for the first offense and nearly double for each subsequent one.
Richard Kassel with the National Resources Defense Council said the 160,000 diesel trucks on state roadways produce three times the particulate matter as the state’s 10 million cars.
