Oct. 27 – Nearly 8% of trucks and buses tested randomly for emissions standards in New Jersey have flunked the test.

The state started issuing tickets April 1, after three years of random roadside emissions tests without issuing fines. Between April 1 and Sept. 25, reports the Bergen Record, 10 teams of roadside emissions inspectors tested 61,598 heavy trucks. Nearly 4,900 failed, getting a $700 fine for the first offense. A $150 rebate was issued upon proof that the vehicle had been repaired.
