Oct. 28 – The American Trucking Assns. will use a $1.2 million Department of Labor grant to train workers who have lost jobs in other industries to become long haul truck drivers.
The training will be done in Tennessee and Pennsylvania with the help of state employment services and local job training agencies.
“This training will help solve two problems – getting laid-off workers back to work and making up the shortage in drivers,” Vice President Al Gore said in announcing the grant.
Secretary of Labor Alexis Herman said the grant will allow 200 laid-off workers “to get back to work at above-average wages.”
This program will include training using industry-based skill standards at schools certified by the Professional Truck Driver Institute of America.
