Marty Lawson Jr., a driver for Harley Davidson Transportation Co., was named Grand Champion of the 1998 National Truck Driving Championships, held August 13-15 in Long Beach, CA.
Lawson took first place in the twins class. He competed for the first time at the national level in 1977 for Giant Foods. Lawson received a $10,000 savings bond from The Associates and a diamond ring and a plaque from the American Trucking Associations.
Eleno Lara, who placed fourth in the 5-axle division, received the Sontheimer Award. This award recognizes the participant who best exemplifies the professional truck driver through his safety record, skill, attitude and personality. Lara drives for HEB Grocery Co.
