A man charged with selling commercial driver's licenses in Pennsylvania has pleaded innocent.
Robert Ferrari Sr., a former Pennsylvania driver's license examiner, was arraigned last week on a 20-count federal indictment, according to the Associated Press. Prosecutors claim that through a middleman, Ferrari sold CDLs to 20 men of Middle Eastern descent for bribes of $50 to $100 each. Most of the licenses included hazardous materials endorsements.
Ferrari and 21 others were arrested in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, but no link has been found between the license scam and the attacks.
The men who allegedly fraudulently obtained commercial driver's licenses from Ferrari were arrested and charged. Most of them have been released on bond, except for two men from Iraq who were detained because the government considers them at risk to flee the country.
