| Horton's new Arctis Two-Speed Fan Drives are powered by eddy current most of the time. |
Horton, Roseville, Minn., has unveiled a new engine cooling system for medium-duty trucks, buses, severe-service vehicles, rear-engine cement mixers and other on- and off-highway equipment with little to no ram air.
The new Arctis Two-Speed Fan Drives are powered by eddy current in most conditions, which turns the fan at a lower speed, reduces operating noise and boosts available horsepower for auxiliary systems. When the vehicle needs additional cooling, the fan drive springs actuate to run the fan at full input speed.
Since the eddy current mode provides sufficient cooling most of the time, full-speed fan operation is cut by 85 percent. This not only improves fuel economy, but it also improves fan drive, belt and tensioner reliability.
Horton says the new fan drives are built with superior bearing technology, a high-torque clutch pack to drive larger fans at higher ratios, and a larger air chamber for full disengagement.
