| Tom Berg accepts a lifetime achievement award from TWNA. |
Tom Berg, Heavy Duty Trucking's senior equipment editor, was awarded the 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award by the Truck Writers of North America (TWNA) at the group's annual banquet at the Mid-America Trucking Show. This is the highest award bestowed by TWNA.
Berg has written about commercial trucks and the people who run them for 32 years, both as an HDT staffer and as a freelance reporter and photographer. He is noted in the trucking industry as an accomplished writer with a sharp wit and a wide breadth of industry knowledge and has won numerous awards for journalistic excellence for his work at HDT. His honors include two Grand Neal awards in the Jesse H. Neal competition. Neal awards are considered the Pulitzer Prizes of business journalism. The Grand Neal each year honors the best of all entries in the prestigious competition.
He holds a Commercial Drivers License and is one of the few journalists in trucking qualified to drive and evaluate new trucks, trailers and equipment. Berg's expertise has earned him the respect of equipment manufacturers as a tough, fair and thorough reporter who knows his market and his industry.
"Tom's accomplishments in the trucking industry over the past three decades speak for themselves," said Kate Miller, vice president, Newport Communications. "He is factual and forthright in his reporting because he stays on top of the latest technology."
"Tom is a consummate professional who is able to take the most complicated technical information and make it understandable and accessible to anyone who reads it," said Deborah Whistler, HDT editorial director. "He's also developed a depth of industry expertise that makes him one of the most knowledgeable writers in our field."
In addition to excellence in journalism and service to TWNA, recipients of the TWNA Lifetime Achievement Award have a well-established record of working with other industry organizations, and of sharing their knowledge, skills, contacts and resources for the general improvement of trucking industry communications.
Berg worked his way through Marquette University's College of Journalism by driving newspaper delivery trucks, graduating in 1965. He served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve, and is an active member of American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts in Westerville, Ohio.
He worked in television news and public relations before going to work for Heavy Duty Trucking magazine in 1978. Berg is a co-founder and was the first president of the Truck Writers of North America. He is also the former editor of Road King and American Trucker magazines.
TWNA is an organization of professionals involved in gathering, writing and reporting news and information about trucks, trucking and the trucking industry.
