Driving School, Fleet Backing Women in Trucking Inc.
The Women in Trucking Association (WIT) has announced that women who receive their certificate in driver training at Arkansas State University - Newport's Commercial Driver Training Institute, will automatically become members of Women In Trucking Inc.
WIT was recently formed to encourage the employment of women in the trucking industry, promote their accomplishments and minimize obstacles faced by women in trucking.
Bentley Wallace, director of the Arkansas Commercial Driver Training Institute, said he'd like to see more women consider a career in trucking, and after completing training, he wants to see that each one finds success and long-term opportunities.
Wallace approached Harvey Beech of Freight Systems Inc., based in North Little Rock, Ark., and asked him to sponsor a membership in Women In Trucking for every female driver. Beech and his co-owners at Freight Systems are the largest independent operator provider to US Xpress Inc., and will be funding the first-year membership dues for all female graduates from the ACDTI program.
Ellen Voie, WIT board chairwoman, said "Our goal is to bring more women into the trucking industry, and with the support of driver training schools, such as ASU-Newport, we can encourage and assist women who wish to make trucking their career choice."
Arkansas State University Newport and Freight Systems, Inc have also agreed to become corporate members of Women In Trucking.
