ODFL February LTL Tonnage Jumps, Expectations Raised

Old Dominion Freight Line on Monday reported an increase in its less-than-truckload tons per day for February of 11.7% compared with February 2013, following growth of 10.1% for January 2014 compared to the year before.

ATA Truck Tonnage Index Decreased 2.8% in October

The American Trucking Associations’ advanced seasonally adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index fell 2.8% in October, the first decrease since July. In September, the index was up 0.5%. September’s increase was less than the preliminary 1.4% gain ATA reported on Oct. 22.

The economy and freight continues to chug along in an "OK" mode, while stagnant capacity and new and pending regulations put the industry "on the cusp of a capacity crunch" if the economy speeds up, according to a panel of economic and industry experts at the American Trucking Associations' annual convention Sunday.

ATA's U.S. Freight Transportation Forecast to 2024 calculates overall freight revenue will grow by 63.6% to $1.3 trillion annually in 2024 and trucking will see its share of those revenue rise to 81% from 80.7% in 2012.
