Hybrid Electric-Drive Trailer Tandem Being Developed

Prototype uses a belt and pulleys to transfer energy between the axle differential and a motor-generator. Production version will mount the motor inside the differential where it will be gear-driven.

The system captures energy as a tractor-trailer brakes and runs downhill, and reapplies energy through a drive axle to help the truck launch and run uphill. Operation on the trailer is completely autonomous.

NHTSA Proposes More Effective Rear Impact Guards

The proposed rules would prevent "passenger compartment intrusion" of a car that rear-ends a trailer for 5 mph more than now.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has proposed rules that would require “more robust” rear impact guards on trailers and semitrailers. The stronger guards would remain effective at up to 35 mph – compared to 30 mph for current guards.
