Vermont Considering Tax Hikes for Diesel and Gasoline

As lawmakers in Vermont look to raise money for road and other transportation projects, trucking could get dragged into the mix with talk of a possible diesel tax hike. One proposal in the state legislature calls for increasing the diesel tax by 2 cents per gallon this year followed by a 2-cent hike in 2014.

Maryland Gov. Fuel Tax Plan Similar to Virginia's

Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley has borrowed a page from Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell’s playbook, with proposed changes to the state’s tax on gasoline to raise highway funds. According to published reports there is no indication that it would affect the diesel fuel tax.

GAO Suggests Mileage Fees for Trucks

Congress might want to consider a mileage fee for trucks and electric vehicles when it looks for ways to strengthen highway funding, says the Government Accountability Office. GAO said that while privacy concerns and other issues limit the usefulness of such fees for automobiles, Congress should consider a pilot program to test them for trucks and electric cars
