Trucking Insurance Company Founder Indicted

The founder and one-time head of a group that sells insurance to truck drivers has been indicted by a federal grand jury for using numerous foreign trusts and secret Cayman Island bank accounts as part of a scheme to avoid paying more than $7 million in income taxes and for lying to federal authorities.

FMCSA Posts Guidance on New Broker, Freight Forwarder Requirements

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is setting an Oct. 1 deadline for compliance with new requirements for brokers and freight forwarders. In a Federal Register notice Thursday, the agency laid out its plan for implementing the terms of last year’s highway law, including a $75,000 bond requirement.

Legislation Would Up Minimum Truck Insurance Almost 500%

On Friday, Rep. Matt Cartwright (D-Penn) introduced a bill that would raise the required insurance minimum for motor carriers, dubbed the Safe and Fair Environment on Highways Achieved through Underwriting Levels Act (H.R. 2730) otherwise known as “SAFE HAUL."

New Study Puts Spotlight on FMCSA Insurance Requirement

A group of trucking companies released research indicating that the federal insurance requirement for the industry is too low, but others such as ATA and OOIDA disagree. The Trucking Alliance, a group of seven carriers that lobby for safety legislation on Capitol Hill, found that the dollar settlements in some cases were far above the $750,000 minimum federal insurance requirement.
