Maryland Demonstrates Drivewyze Wireless Bypass Service

Federal and industry luminaries gathered at a Maryland truck weigh station Monday to observe the latest in wireless bypass technology. The state implemented the Drivewyze system last September and has found that it helps focus its enforcement efforts.

72-Hour Roadcheck Inspection Blitz Starts Tuesday

Starting today, Tuesday, June 4, and running 72 hours straight, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance and its members across the United States, Canada and Mexico, will be participating in Roadcheck 2013, the 26th annual enforcement and outreach campaign promoting commercial vehicle safety.

FMCSA Shutters Colorado Trucking Company

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has ordered a Colorado-based trucking company to end all interstate operations after it discovered flagrant violations of license, hours of service and drug testing regulations and equipment so unsafe it was impounded by state police. It's just the latest in a string increasingly frequent such actions by the FMCSA.

The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association has filed a second complaint with the U.S. District Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit against the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regarding its safety records and the DataQ appeal process.

For the second straight day on Wednesday, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration announced it has ordered two more truckers off the road saying they are an “imminent hazard to public safety.”

Trucker Ordered Off the Road as Hazard to the Public

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has declared New Mexico-licensed truck driver Bobby C. Cleveland to be an imminent hazard to public safety and has ordered him not to operate any commercial motor vehicle in interstate commerce. Cleveland was served the federal orders May 4.

Regulatory Climate Explored at Zonar Conference

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has a number of proposed rules scheduled for this summer, including establishing a drug and alcohol database, mandatory speed limiters and prohibiting driver coercion. However, proposals on electronic logs, entry-level driver training and safety fitness probably won't be unveiled as scheduled, according to a panel discussion May 15 during Zonar's inaugural user's conference.

CVSA Takes Issue with ATA Call for More Traffic Enforcement

Traffic enforcement alone only gets to one of the CSA BASICs, but traffic enforcement with an inspection gets to the three BASICs that are most closely tied with risk, says CVSA.

A trucking leader’s call for police to put more emphasis on traffic enforcement rather than roadside inspections yielded a polite “thank you” from the enforcement community – and disagreement with some of his message.
