Study: Biggest Downside to Natural Gas Trucks is Upstream Methane

As EDF sees it, even though trucks fueled by natural gas may be regarded as running green, methane is released to the atmosphere “all along the value chain."

Upstream methane is seen as the biggest downside to natural gas trucks, according to a new policy-analysis paper published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology.

Environmental Defense Fund to Study Fugitive Methane from LNG Fueling Operations

Climate scientists have suggested that methane leakage during filling and transfer operations, possible with a wide-scale switch from diesel to natural gas as heavy truck fuel, could contribute more to global warming than the benefit of switching from diesel to natural gas would achieve.
