New FMCSA Rule Targets Willful Violators

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s newest enforcement tool is a shutdown order for carriers that flagrantly disregard the safety rules. Under a final rule to be posted this week, the agency can suspend or revoke the authority of willful repeat violators, and impose civil or criminal penalties.

Trucking Industry Warns D.C. Diesel Registration Proposal Will Hurt City

A proposed ban on diesel-powered vehicles in the District of Columbia has drawn a strong response from a coalition of trucking industry groups. The coalition warned the D.C. Council that provisions in the recently introduced Sustainable D.C. Omnibus Act of 2013 would have “significantly harmful effects on the District’s economy and on the quality of life of District residents.”

ATA Truck Tonnage Index Decreased 2.8% in October

The American Trucking Associations’ advanced seasonally adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index fell 2.8% in October, the first decrease since July. In September, the index was up 0.5%. September’s increase was less than the preliminary 1.4% gain ATA reported on Oct. 22.

Highway Fatalities Rose 3.3% in 2012

The national highway safety effort lost ground in 2012 as fatalities from both car and truck crashes increased compared to the previous year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports a 3.3% increase, from 32,479 to 33,561.

ATA to Allow Non-Members in National Truck Driving Championships

ORLANDO -- The American Trucking Associations’ board of directors on Tuesday voted to make the National Truck Driving Championships more inclusive by allowing non-ATA members of state trucking associations to compete in the annual safety competition.
