Arkansas Best Corp. reported a first quarter 2013 net loss despite continued encouraging trends in its emerging businesses. Year-over-year revenue and tonnage growth at LTL carrier ABF Freight System, Inc., were offset by higher wage and benefit costs for employees represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

ABF and the Teamsters still have a ways to go to come up with a contract both sides can agree on.

ABF and Teamsters Extend Contract, ABF Still Challenging YRC-Teamsters Concessions

ABF has indicated in the current round of talks it is looking to get big concessions from the Teamsters while the union is looking to increase wages and benefits.

The Teamsters Union and the less-than-truckload carrier ABF failed to reach an agreement by the time the most recent labor pact expired at the end of March, but they intend to keep talking, having agreed to a 30-day extension.
