Westport Develops New Natural Gas System for Medium-Duty Truck Engines

Westport Innovations says it's introduced the first generation of enhanced spark-ignited (ESI) natural gas system. This new approach to natural gas combustion technology is designed provide a "downsized" natural gas solution that is cost competitive while providing similar levels of power, torque, and fuel economy to a larger diesel engine.

Bimbo Bakeries USA is leasing 16 natural gas trucks for its California trucking fleet. Bimbo has a fueling agreement in place with Clean Energy Fuels to fuel the fleet of Class 8, heavy-duty trucks using Clean Energy's network of public-access CNG stations throughout Northern California.

Report: 14% of Medium, Heavy Duty Vehicles Sold in 2035 Will Run on Alternative Fuels

Medium and heavy duty vehicles represent less than 5% of the total vehicle market today, and the vast majority of these use conventional internal combustion engines powered by either gasoline or diesel. That is changing as less expensive alternatives to petroleum-based fuels, such as natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas and electricity make inroads in the market.
