ABF and Teamsters Extend Contract, ABF Still Challenging YRC-Teamsters Concessions

ABF has indicated in the current round of talks it is looking to get big concessions from the Teamsters while the union is looking to increase wages and benefits.

The Teamsters Union and the less-than-truckload carrier ABF failed to reach an agreement by the time the most recent labor pact expired at the end of March, but they intend to keep talking, having agreed to a 30-day extension.

28 People Charged with Skimming More Than $1.7 Million from Trucking Companies

A 97-count indictment has been filed charging 28 people with violations including conspiracy, wire fraud and money laundering for their roles in a scheme that allegedly skimmed more than $1.7 million from trucking companies according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Labor Department Orders Carrier to Pay Back Wages

Contract Transport has agreed to pay 201 truck drivers a total of $160,073 in back wages and fringe benefits after an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division found that the trucking company violated provisions of the McNamara-O’Hara Service Contract Act.

Diesel and Gasoline Prices Move Lower Again, Oil Continues Slow Creep Upward

The weekly roundup from the U.S. Energy Department shows the price of diesel dropped 1.3 cents over the past week to $3.993 per gallon.

The average U.S. cost of diesel has fallen below the $4 a gallon mark for the first time since January.

Phony Letters Being Sent to Motor Carriers

Another round of fraudulent U.S. DOT letters is being distributed, largely by fax, to motor carrier officials in an attempt to obtain banking information from the targeted carriers, warn the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the U.S. Transportation Department’s Office of Inspector General.

Highway Gridlock Grows Worse

A new report says gridlock in the U.S. has staged a dramatic comeback after two years of post-recession lows, but it’s also a sign the economy is bouncing back. Data from the most recent Inrix Gridlock Index shows traffic jumped by almost 10% during February – the largest year-over-year increase recorded in two years, and a healthy sign of rising economic activity across 100 metro areas.

EPA Targets Gasoline Emissions, Fuel Quality

The Environmental Protection Agency is proposing new emission standards for cars and light trucks, and lower sulfur content in gasoline. The Tier 3 standards, as they are called, would be phased in starting 2017. They would cover cars, light-duty trucks, medium-duty passenger vehicles and some heavy-duty vehicles.
