DOT Awards Nearly Half-Billion Dollars in TIGER Grants

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx has announced that 52 transportation projects in 37 states will receive a total of approximately $474 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery 2013 discretionary grant program, also known as TIGER.

FMCSA Posts Guidance on New Broker, Freight Forwarder Requirements

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is setting an Oct. 1 deadline for compliance with new requirements for brokers and freight forwarders. In a Federal Register notice Thursday, the agency laid out its plan for implementing the terms of last year’s highway law, including a $75,000 bond requirement.

FMCSA Testing New Way to Screen Carrier Applicants

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is testing a new approach to screening new entrants into the business, in hopes of saving money and improving efficiency. In July the agency began a year-long test of a pre-screening process designed to identify high-risk applicants that need an on-site safety review and give low-risk applicants a way to file their information electronically.

Jack Thiessen, a former editor with trucking publisher Newport Communications, public relations counsel, newspaper reporter, and infantry veteran of World War II, passed away Friday, Aug. 30, in Temperance, Mich. He was 89.
