Industry experts say a glut of used trucks remains on the market and, in extreme cases, some fleets actually owe more for equipment than it is now worth on the secondary market.
So far in 2016, auction prices have decreased less than 3% per month compared to nearly 5% per month in the second half of 2015.
Used commercial vehicle transactions of GVW 3-8 vehicles were just over 176,000 units during the last quarter of the 2015 calendar year, up 14.3 percent from the same time period in 2014 calendar year.
Class 8, the largest single segment, last year accounted for 271,000 units. 2010 was even stronger, with 320,000 Class 8 transactions.
Sales for used Class 8 trucks fell by 10% in August compared with the previous month and 6% compared to last year according to a report by ACT Research.
Sales of used Class 8 trucks sold in July were 2% better than the month before, as selling prices remained high.
The average selling price for Class 8 trucks reached just over $44,400 in February, rising for a second consecutive month and setting a high-water mark, according to ACT Research.
December 2013 slowed in many segments of the market, but 2014 will probably resume healthy activity, says the Truck Blue Book analysis.
Used commercial vehicle registrations during the first half of the 2013 calendar year are up more than 9% over the same period last year, according to Polk, the global automotive market intelligence firm recently acquired by IHS.
