As Americans hit the road for the Fourth of July holiday, they’ll be driving on slightly smoother roads, crossing fewer deficient bridges and spending less time stuck in traffic jams, according to think tank the Reason Foundation and its new Annual Highway Report.

UPDATED -- A bridge along Interstate 5 in Washington state partially collapsed Thursday evening, closing part of the route. Authorities are blaming it on a truck pulling an oversize load but the company says it has the proper permit to use the route.
While AAA projects slightly fewer Americans overall will journey 50 miles or more from home during the Memorial Day holiday weekend than last year, due to a decline in air travel, traffic on the roadways is expected to be higher.

UPDATED -- Because a tanker fire has closed I-81 in the Harrisburg, Pa., area, the Pennsylvania Turnpike between Harrisburg East (#247) and Carlisle (#226), is being used as an alternate route. Tolls are being waived for all vehicles that enter and exit at those two interchanges only.

The eastbound and westbound I-44 rest areas near Halltown, Mo., at mile marker 50, between Springfield and Joplin will close May 29 and will be converted to a truck parking facility.
Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., reintroduced a bill that would restrict truck size and weight limits. His move positions a familiar piece in the size-and-weight chess match as the next highway bill approaches.
Lawmakers in Maine have given final passage to a bill allowing speed limits to increase along Maine’s interstates, but are moving to pull the plug on a study to determine the feasibility of an east-west highway.

The Virginia Department of Transportation is beginning work to remove an unstable area of soil on Afton Mountain above Interstate 64 at milepost 100.3. The emergency work will require intermittent closing the right lane of westbound I-64 from milepost 103 to milepost 100.

Trucks will have to be rerouted from the U.S. 51 Ohio River Bridge between Wickliffe, Ky., and Cairo, Ill., for approximately 70 days beginning in June, turning a 6-mile trip from Wickliffe to Cairo into a 80-mile detour.
