VIDEO: Walmart Canada's SuperCube Rig

Walmart's futuristic concept truck wasn't the only rig that was featured at it sustainability conference. Watch this video about Walmart Canada's SuperCube rig, which uses a cabover glider kit, drom box and trailer innovations to reduce transportation costs by 24% and greenhouse emissions by 14%. Blue Tree Systems Inc., a provider of reefer monitoring, trailer tracking, and in-cab fleet management solutions and ATDynamics Inc., a supplier of semi-trailer rear-drag aerodynamics technology, announced the availability of a modified door sensor to detect when a semi-trailer’s TrailerTail aerodynamic device is properly deployed by a driver.

Volvo Trucks Announces XE11 Fuel Efficiency Package for 11-Liter Engine

Volvo Trucks expanded its XE powertrain package lineup with the introduction of XE11 for its 11-liter Volvo D11 engine. XE11 is available on Volvo VNM and VNL models and rated up to 80,000 pounds GCWR. The powertrain package improves fuel efficiency by up to 3%, according to the company.

Study: Fuel Consumption of New Trucks Can Be Reduced by More

Fuel consumption of new heavy-duty vehicles could be reduced by more than a third by 2025, according to the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, if the next phase of greenhouse gas/fuel economy standards pushes improvements in areas such as trailer aerodynamics and waste-heat energy recovery.

How to Improve Fuel Efficiency on the Road

According to AAA, the national average price of diesel is $3.888 - call it $3.89 - per gallon at the time of this writing. Given that your truck likely has a fuel capacity of 150 to 300 gallons, it would cost $583 to over $1,167 per fill-up at the current rate. In other words, as you may have already noticed, fueling up for a long-haul is quite expensive.

Study: Fuel-Efficient Tires Perform in Winter Weather

Transport Canada recently released the results of a study on the safety and environmental performance of low rolling resistance tires. Low rolling resistance tires are designed to improve vehicle fuel efficiency. They are made of advanced materials and have treads, dimensions and weights that help to minimize the energy lost as the tire rolls across the road surface.
