UPDATED -- President Obama pushed the start button on the next phase of medium- and heavy-duty fuel economy standards.
Like many other parts of the American economy, trucking felt negative effects in January due to extremely cold weather, snow and ice, according to just released figures.
The nation’s largest group of truckers is speaking out against President Obama’s Tuesday announcement ordering federal regulators to increase fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas standards for trucks beyond the 2018 model year. Others say the plan will pay dividends in the trucking industry.

UPDATED -- The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration claims a new study confirms its Compliance, Safety, Accountability enforcement program is more effective at identifying commercial bus and truck companies of all sizes for targeted enforcement than the system it replaced.

A field test of the 34-hour restart provision of the new hours of service rule shows that the restrictions improve safety. The test found that the provision, which requires drivers to take two successive periods off between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. during their once-a-week restart, is more effective at combating fatigue than the earlier rule, said the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

ATA’s Technology & Maintenance Council is introducing a Certified Specialist Program for users of the Vehicle Maintenance Reporting Standards. VMRS is the industry standard coding convention for tracking equipment and maintenance information.
Truck dealers and fleet managers need to work together to smooth maintenance on complex trucks so the industry can continue to grow, Philip Byrd, 2014 chairman of the American Trucking Associations, told an audience at the American Truck Dealers’ annual convention in New Orleans on Sunday.
