Lowe’s has launched a dedicated fleet of natural gas-powered trucks at its regional distribution center in Mount Vernon, Texas, working with NFI. Lowe’s dedicated fleet at Mount Vernon is among the first serving a major retail distribution center in North America to run solely on natural gas.

J.J. Taylor Companies Inc. annouced the expansion of its CNG powered fleet and the building of a second CNG station in Ft. Myers, Fla. The company will receive 10 new 2014 Freightliner Cascadia tractors equipped with the new Cummins-Westport ISX 12G engine and the Allison 4000 HS automatic transmission by January 2014.

Fleets that want to use an even "greener" alternative fuel than natural gas can now purchase renewable natural gas fuel, made from methane that comes from landfills, large farms and other waste streams, from Clean Energy.
While natural gas has pushed its way to center stage in the alternative fuels discussion, the investment in equipment and infrastructure make it less than appealing to many fleets. However, anyone who is currently running on diesel fuel can easily switch to a greener alternative without that type of up-front investment. They simply have to fill up their fuel tank with biodiesel.
Volvo Trucks North America believes dimethyl ether, or DME, is the real fuel of the future, and the company intends to get it to market as a motor fuel by 2015 in Volvo VN models as well as Mack Pinnacle trucks from its sister company.
After more than 40 years of using propane as a motor fuel, the people at The Schwan Food Co. still believe they’ve got the right stuff. Schwan’s experience with propane goes back to the 1970s, when Arab oil embargoes threatened supplies of gasoline and diesel and drove up their prices.

PHOENIX -- The affordability, abundance and relatively fast return on investment for natural gas trucks has pushed interest in electric hybrids for medium- and heavy-duty trucks and other alt-fuel alternatives to the back burner, but that doesn't mean truck makers have given up on hybrid drives and researching a variety of other technologies for future "green" trucks.
A dual-fuel conversion system can offer some of the fuel- and emissions-saving benefits of a natural gas engine without going out and buying a brand-new truck. Read more in this story from the September issue of HDT.

PHOENIX -- What should you expect in President Obama's second term? A single word: gridlock. The current government shutdown is just one more symptom of a Congress that hasn't passed a budget since 2007. Yet that might not affect green fleets' investments in clean-burning and alternative fueled vehicles as much as you might think.
General Motors will offer bi-fuel versions of the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra heavy-duty trucks and dedicated compressed natural gas versions of the 2014 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana full-size passenger vans next year.
