OOIDA Seeks to Exempt ‘Small-Business Truckers’ from ELD Rule

With the new electronic logging device mandate set to take effect in less than four weeks, the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association has petitioned the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to issue a temporary but lengthy exemption to the new safety rule for “small-business truckers.”

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will be issuing to haulers of agricultural commodities a 90-day temporary waiver of the new electronic logging device mandate, and also is clarifying how ELDs will work with the personal conveyance provision and the 150 air miles hours-of-service exemption of the hours of service regulations.

New FMCSA Deputy Administrator Outlines Agency Priorities

BIRMINGHAM – On her third day on the job, the new number-two at the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration outlined the priorities of the agency under the Trump administration, including ELD implementation, deregulation, infrastructure investment, autonomous vehicles, and fighting human trafficking.

ELD Violations Won't Count Against CSA Scores During Transition Period

Federal officials have taken another step to make the transition to mandatory electronic devices less painful. If drivers are cited at roadside for not complying with the ELD rule come the Dec. 18 deadline, the citation will be a “no points cite” that will not affect the Safety Measurement System that feeds into CSA scores – until April 1.
