UPDATED -- McNeilus Truck and Manufacturing is letting owners of 6,745 concrete mixer and refuse trucks know that they may be equipped with fire extinguishers that don’t work properly, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.

The trucks are equipped with Kidde plastic valve disposable handheld fire extinguishers that may not properly discharge when the lever is pressed, NHTSA said.

McNeilus is notifying vehicle owners of the recall and advising vehicle owners to follow the provided instructions from Kidde to inspect their fire extinguishers. Kidde will replace the fire extinguishers if necessary, free of charge.

The recall affects extinguishers used in 2013-2015 model-year McNeilus Bridge Master Mixer, Standard Mixer, Sliding Trailer Mixer, Standard Rear Loader, Rear Loader with 3.5 YD HD Tail, Zero Radius Automated, AutoReach, Atlantic Front Loader, Split Body Rear Loader, Rear Loader with Tag Axle, Metro Pak Rear Loader, XXC Rear Loader, and Pacific Front Loader vehicles.

These trucks were manufactured from Aug. 1, 2013, to May 14 of this year.

The recall is expected to begin this month. Truck owners can reach McNeilus customer service at (888) 686-7278. McNeilus’ number for this recall is Kidde: CPSC 15-079.

Updated 5:25 EDT 10/9/2015 to make it clear that the fault is with the fire extinguishers from Kidde, not any problems with the McNeilus vehicles themselves.
