I-94 is closed between Battle Creek and Kalamazo, Michigan, after an estimated 150-vehicle pileup on the snowy interstate this morning killed at least one person.
Many vehicles were reported to be on fire, including several tractor-trailers, one carrying fireworks and another a hazmat load of formic acid. Videos show fireworks going off and black smoke. Because of the hazmat, officials were evacuating people to 3 miles away.
The crashes happened between mile markers 88 and 92 in Eastern Kalamazoo County, near Galesburg, around 10 a.m. eastern time. Winter road conditions could have contributed to the accidents; it was snowing at the time.
Officials said I-94 would remain closed for at least 12 hours and are advising drivers to avoid the area.
